On the first Saturday of February, there is a math competition involving teams around the nation called “MathCounts.” Our regional competition is in Sheboygan against about 15 other teams. Each team consists of just FOUR students, one from both the Middle and Intermediate School, although we can bring up to four more students to the contest to compete as individuals.
SPECIFICS: In the MathCounts competition there is a 40 minute “Sprint Round” that has 30 questions where no calculators can be used. Next is a “Target Round” where calculators are used. Students get 4 pairs of questions with 6 minutes per pair. Then there is the “Team Round” where teams will have 20 minutes to tackle 10 tough questions. The top 10 contestants from the two individual rounds are ranked. The final round, called the “Countdown Round,” pits #10 vs. #9 in an oral competition. The winner then goes against #8, and so on – until an overall individual winner is found. Then the individuals are re-ranked based on the Countdown results.
STATE: The top teams in our regional (usually 4 teams) go to “State” along with 9 more individuals who aren’t on these teams. Historically, West De Pere has been the team to beat. For students you go to “State;” “State” is held the first Saturday in March.
The “MathCounts Trainer” and “Art of Problem Solving” are VERY helpful Apps to download and add to a phone or tablet!!! You can also practice these on your chromebook with the links below along with a couple of other websites that might be helpful:
