Events
We celebrate three main events each year: National Coming Out Day, Transgender Day of Visibility, and National Day of Silence.
National Coming Out Day
National Coming Out Day is held on October 11th each year. The West De Pere GSA encourages all students to be proud to be who they are, to celebrate not only their own uniqueness but the uniqueness of those around us. During the week we encourage students and staff to wear rainbow ribbons to support LGBTQindividuals. Students and staff are welcomed to hang signs on their lockers or doors that read “I’m an Ally for LGBTQ Youth” or “I’m Coming Out!” These signs are designed by and colored by GSA members.
Day of Silence
The Day of Silence is a nationally recognized day in April of each year. Each year students at West join thousands of students in high schools and college campuses across the nation in a Day of Silence to protest the discrimination, harassment and abuse—in effect the silencing—faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students and their allies in schools. A 2013 National School Climate Survey found that more than 4 out of 5 LGBTQ students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and 29% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. The Day of Silence is one way students and their allies are making anti-bullying, harassment and name-calling unacceptable in America’s schools.
GSA Group meets Wednesdays at 2:50 pm in Room G115.
