Visitors to Phantom Knight are often struck that the learning environment more closely resembles a workplace than a traditional school. They are greeted by the hum of approximately 30 students doing the work of learning: some at tables, others on a couch, some in the art or science room, some helping others, and some temporarily off-task. There are no bells, and nobody is raising their hand to ask to get a drink, use the restroom, or take a break. Students and advisors are free to access each other for their help and expertise.
Phantom Knight students benefit from increased flexibility and variety during their school day. Reflecting this, students spend time in a large, open area containing student workstations, personalized storage areas and “soft” areas for relaxed, independent study. Students learn independent work habits in this space. The technology-rich environment supports instruction with a range of learning opportunities, including self-directed, independent or team project-based activities and one-on-one mentoring—all within a continuous space. Workstations distributed throughout the space allow advisors to assist in individual and team research efforts. By structuring their own work day, students are better equipped with the skills and resourcefulness to succeed in college and beyond.
A Typical Day
School begins at 7:30 with Advisory. The school is divided into two advisory groups, each with half of the student body. Students set daily goals for themselves, complete “housekeeping tasks,” and have other timely educational discussions.
Following advisory, students work on projects, reading, writing, ALEKS math, Headrush, or attend a course off campus. There are two 15 minute breaks and a 35 minute lunch period each day.
On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, students travel to the Broadview YMCA for Physical Education. Students are free to participate in an organized team activity or use any of the YMCA’s facilities. On selected days, Physical Education may involve going to a driving range, bowling, or snowshoeing.
Each day wraps up at 2:40 with an end-of-the-day circle. Students and advisors reflect together on the day and share information.
